Tuesday, June 22, 2008 from 9 am to 4pm, RM/URISA is putting on another installment of their geospatial technology series dealing with real world interoperability examples using open data standards. My boss will giving a talk at the event based upon some work we’ve been doing with both “heavyweight” standards like those put out by the OGC as well as some of the lighterweight standards like KML, JSON, and GeoJSON that have gained in popularity with the neogeography movement.
Here’s the abstract:
While proprietary, vendor specific data formats have been the norm during the evolution of the GIS industry, organizations such as the OGC and neogeography vendors such as Google and Virtual Earth have brought about the adoption and widespread use of a variety of open data standards. These open data standards can broadly be divided into “heavyweight” (OGC WMS, WFS, CS-W for example) and “lightweight” (KML, JSON, GeoJSON) standards. As a consulting organization, Idea Integration has assembled a team with core capabilities in modeling, implementation, and development using a variety of these data standards in addition to vendor specific formats. Brady Hustad, Director of Idea Integration’s Geospatial practice will compare and contrast some of the more common heavyweight and light weight data standards. Drawing from direct project experience and the experience of Idea consultants, Mr. Hustad will provide examples of OGC system implementations and highlight ongoing efforts involving the use of KML, JSON, GeoJSON, and other formats as appropriate. Examples will include information from OGC initiatives at the state and local government level, as well as recent neogeography efforts undertaken by Idea Integration and other consulting organizations. Available APIs which simplify the development process and abstract many of the open data standard details away from the developer will be referenced and discussed.
While I was originally slated to prepare this presentation and give the talk, the event got rescheduled into the middle of a family vacation so Brady will be there in my absence.
