About the Author

By training I am an Arctic Tundra Botanist.  As my graduate studies focused heavily on landscape ecology and GIS applications thereto, and since I quickly realized that I’d need something to pay the bills for all that education, I have occupied myself professionally for 9 years as a GIS software developer and solution architect.  Early in my career my focus was on the ESRI proprietary languages (AML, Avenue, etc) and applications development primarily for natural resources applications.  In the last several years my focus has shifted more to standard Microsoft and .NET technologies.  I am currently paying the bills as a Solution Architect for a consulting organization and Agile development shop based in Fort Collins, Colorado.  My project experiences focus on design and development of large enterprise systems for a variety of vertical markets.

While the bulk of my experiences have focused on natural resources management, I have significant experience in the design, development, and implementation of large systems for health care and chronic disease management, public safety, state and local government, and the retail market.  While I am primarily .NET and ESRI focused, I also do a significant amount of work in the OGC realm as well as encouraging the use of smaller GIS toolsets and vendors where possible.

My professional and technical interests are primarily focused on moving my clients toward more standard architecture and development practices and patterns to facilitate a closer integration of GIS with the standard IT enterprise.  In addition, I encourage the development and use of agile practices by my client base whenever possible.

From a personal standpoint, my family, music, home brewing, and all things flyfishing are what keep me going.    Outside the office, when not changing a diaper,  you’ll likely find me picking a bluegrass lick on my guitar, or standing in a river waving a stick.
